It’s fresh, not as a description, but as a reflection of what water does to the body and the land when it touches them.
In Maijiki, “oko” means water. It shapes the lives of those who have lived alongside it for centuries: fishing, hunting, growing up by the river, coming and going from the community. When the Napo recedes, the boat won’t start, and the community is cut off.
That heritage isn’t abstract; it lives in people’s bodies and in their words. Cuaña smiles before answering, “freshness.” The children play soccer on a flooded field without complaint. Natalia washes clothes while her children dive into the river. Matanque speaks to the river and says, “Don’t stop giving me water. Otherwise, I’ll die.” Vittorino calmly recalls that a year ago it hailed ice, something that shouldn’t have happened, but did, and smiles at the one who gazes at the river.
The watersheds remain intact thanks to the care of these communities, but today they are threatened by poaching, illegal loggers, a proposed highway built without prior consultation, and the climate crisis.

Si no, me muero”.
